Chess training and practice supports the student's development of many higher order thinking skills (HOTS)—like problem solving, decision making, critical and creative thinking, planning, and even spatial intelligence. Chess training and practice also helps them improve general cognitive ability and scholastic achievement—especially in mathematics. In this class, students will continue their journey towards mastery of this 1500 year old game and will begin to emerge as true contenders as they master the final phase of the game, the Endgame. Lessons will be organized as follows: Day 1 : Rook Mates, Zugzwang & King Play • Part 1 – Basic Checkmates: King and Rook vs Lone King • Part 2 – Zugzwang Explanation and Examples • Part 3 – King Play, King Power and King Activity • Mini-Game – King Play Practice Day 2 : Passed Pawns, Promoting & Other “Pawn Tactics” • Part 1 – Introduction to Passed Pawns and Basic Pawn Play Strategy • Part 2 – Under-Promotion, Pawn Tactics and the “Rule of the Square” • Mini-Game – Converting Your Passers • Exercise 1 – Circle the Passed Pawns • Exercise 2 – To “Under” or Promote Day 3 : Opposition, Technique & Advanced King Play • Part 1 – Opposition Explained with Basic King and Pawn Endings • Part 2 – Distant Opposition • Part 3 – Irregular Opposition • Exercises 1 and 2– King and Pawn Endings Day 4 : Advanced Endgame Play & Winning Technique • Part 1 – Win When Winning: The Principles of Technique • Part 2 – The “Magic Square” Technique: Queen vs Advanced Pawn(s) • Exercise 1 – Is the King Too Close • Live Gameplay – Put Your Skills to the Test! I will be teaching using lichess.org for gameplay and a soundpad with some wacky sound effects to help with retention. All exercises will be interactive, with students able to try different solutions to puzzles and cooperate with one another to find the best answer. This class is for those who already know the pieces and rules, have a firm grasp on the fundamentals of the game, and have completed the Intermediate Level 1 Course. If you are completely new to the game, I suggest taking the Beginner Levels 1 & 2 Courses, followed by the Intermediate Level 1 Course before enrolling in this course. You can find the Level 1 Course here: https://outschool.com/classes/dark-horse-tactics-intro-to-chess-for-beginner-level-1-dxaYlQH5#uszqDwNCV9 You can enroll in the Beginner Level 2 Course here: https://outschool.com/classes/dark-horse-tactics-intro-to-chess-for-beginner-level-2-MtdpR0Vz#uszqDwNCV9 And the Intermediate Level 1 Course can be found here: https://outschool.com/classes/dark-horse-tactics-chess-lessons-for-intermediate-level-1-2a5UVLEX#uszqDwNCV9

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!
My name is Mr. Matthew and I teach Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced chess/chess theory! I've been teaching chess for 15 years and I've spent half of that time working exclusively with children. I believe in a hands-on approach that enables young learners to get in the game as quickly as possible, and that the best way to learn is by doing!
I also volunteer to mentor young men in my community through a program started by my lifelong friend. We teach them to uphold strong moral values, the importance of entrepreneurship, and to tackle self-discipline early on in life because we believe it's easier to raise strong men than it is to fix broken ones!
