Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
In this flexible schedule course, we will explore the many changes and transformations that the art of dance has experienced throughout the world's history. As an experienced dance teacher, I believe it is important for all dance students to learn the history behind the styles of dance they are learning in class. Non-dancers may also enjoy this course, as it encourages them to explore a diverse, inclusive dance world and discusses cultural and social influences, important historical figures (such as Catherine de Medici, Louis XIV, etc) and culturally important events in history. We will also discuss how technology influences the future of dance in every genre.

During our four weeks of class, we will explore the history of ballet, tap, jazz, modern, contemporary, lyrical, hip hop, African and Caribbean dances and their influence on modern dance styles.

This class is very interactive and uses Nearpod presentations instead of PowerPoint slides. My student-paced Nearpod lessons utilize games, polls, virtual 360° tours, quizzes and several videos. It also features audio readings of each slide, which may be helpful to some students. Within the lesson there are review questions that I will be able to review. At the end of each lesson, I will ask the students a question that I request them to answer in the Outschool classroom. I would love to have an open discussion about some of the information they learned during the session, as well as any questions they might have!

I am very passionate about dance and would love to meet your dancer. As a dance instructor, I know that there is limited time in the studio for teachers to expose students to the history behind these amazing dance techniques and styles. Let's take the time to learn about dance together! Learning more about the history behind dance can really help make you a more well-rounded, experienced dancer, and is a lot of fun.

*Students outside of the age range may be eligible to join; please send me a message if your dancer is interested. Younger learners may need assistance accessing and navigating the Nearpod lessons.
