Dance & Culture Class "Khaleeji" Dance Style

In this one-time class students will learn about a lesser known dance style from the culture in Asia/ SW Asia known as "Khaleeji". We will learn some dance moves, listen to music and learn about the traditional costume worn.

Class Experience

Students will learn:
A new dance style called Khaleeji dance which is from Saudi Arabia and the other gulf countries who also dance "Khaleeji" - UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman.

What does the music sound like from the country/region/culture?
My teaching experience is broad as I have been lucky enough to teach what I love the most- wellness, dance and a healthy lifestyle. 
My initial training comes from (my own health journey) where from the young ages of 15-20 years old, I struggled with my self-confidence, body image and being a healthy person. After being able to self-heal my mental and emotional challenges I began formal education. Dancing has been a big part of my journey to having a healthy body image and lifestyle.

I was drawn to dancing from an early age and began taking dance classes at 10 years old. I danced all the way through college/university as I majored in Acting/Performance and danced in numerous musicals whilst studying my major at university. 

I fell in love with bellydancing specifically and studied with teachers and in dance studios in both NYC and Los Angeles during my college and after college years. I studied bellydance for both my love of dancing and for my fascination with such different dance styles then I had previously learned. 

Studying bellydance styles and my love of traveling lead me to learn about these other ancient styles such as Khaleeji, Anatolian and Egyptian. 

Professional Experience: I moved to Saudi Arabia in 2017 and was hired as the Head of the Physical Education Department for Rowad Al Khaleej International School. I lead the entire PE and Health Department K-12 for 2 years and had eight PE teachers under my leadership. 
My personal students were grades 8-12 where I wrote  and taught my entire Physical Education Curriculum and brought my entire holistic health background and training to the department and into my curriculum. 
I lead weekly teacher meeting to train the other PE teachers who taught the K-7 grades. Together we created an annual "Sports Day", dance competition and introduced physical education into the Kingdom which` previously had little to no allowance of girls participating in any kind of physical education or health education. This was groundbreaking and an opportunity when presented to me, I could not pass up. I moved to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia alone and very excited for the entire experience and opportunity.
I have maintained contact with some of my former students as they have gone onto university now. My time in KSA gave me the first taste of 'Khaleeji" dance and culture by living in the gulf. I spent a lot of time during this two year contract and then after in Bahrain, UAE both Dubai and Abu Dhabi and Kuwait. I lived in both Bahrain and Kuwait as well and continued my studies of Khaleeji dance. 

My love of dance and travel also took me to study and live in ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Anatolia or modern-day Turkey.
This is where I was able to expand my knowledge of ancient dance cultures by studying in the region. I also studied ancient Kurdish dance and Egyptian bellydance. During this time I was able to also study ancient dance from the Levant region including Iraqi dance, Persian dance and Dabke an ancient Lebanese dance. I have lived and spent time in SW Asia, Asia and Asia Minor for a total of almost 6 years. My love for ancient dance continues and I truly look forward to being able to bring my expertise and passion to your learner here on Outschool in the near future.

Prior to moving to the gulf, my education in health and fitness led me to focus on the anatomy and physiology in a sports massage program and became a Licensed therapist in two states. The following are my trainings, Masters Degree and certifications as I have 2000 hours in training clients and students in the field of wellness, dance and fitness. 
I had my own private business in CA, Aspen and Nashville both seeing clients and students in-person and online/phone. 
-Nationally Board Certified as a Holistic Health Counselor HHC
-Certified Holistic Nutritionist
-Certified Personal Trainer
-Certified Yoga Instructor
-Danced over 20 years both formally and informally
-Masters Degree in Holistic Nutrition and Psychological Coaching
-Licensed Anatomical and Physiological Sports Massage Therapist
The only homework will be if the learner would like to continue to practice what they learned in
the prior class. 
I will share music with the class so they can play the same music we listened to in class when they
want to dance on their own. 
Materials: a bottle of water, a space to dance on wood or hard floor with or without carpet. I will show you some costumes that I have when we learn new dances. If you would like to buy these costumes after class we can use them in a different class in this on-going class. Please also bring a long scarf in any color or a long ribbon that is soft.
I will access each student by the ability to create each move I teach from each dance style. 
If a learner needs more support, I can help the learner gain knowledge of the movement and 
encourage them to keep trying. 
There will not a be a "performance" in this class but we will perform all the moves together towards the end
of the class. 
25 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Dear parents, please note this is a fun and interesting class. Most moves are very gentle. 
We will be learner a hair move that I will will demo for the class. We will also learn how to 
do the "hair move" gently so are muscles do not get tight. We will be doing warm-up stretches in
this class and cool-down stretches after learning the dance moves for that class. 

No experience is needed. Each learner can bring a bottle of water and have bare foot or ballet shoes on. 
The moves are not high-impact nor jumping moves. Therefore, students will not be "slipping" if we dance
on a wooden or carpet surface. I will be in barefoot and dancing on a wooden floor and on the carpet. 
This is an all levels class.
Depending on the weekly dance focus other videos may be used that I find on You Tube if they support the dance learning.
