Intro to Tap explores all things related to Tap Dance. In this course, students will learn the basic tap fundamentals, how to create their own tap choreography, and the history of where Tap Dance originated.

Beginner Level
Course Overview: For this course, students will obtain a beginner level understanding of the art of tap dance. Students will not only be exposed to the history of tap dance and its origins, but they will also learn basic beginner tap skills, vocabulary, a tap dance warm-up, and by the end of the course be able to learn a tap combination and choreograph a small section by themselves. Essential Question: How can one learn choreography, add onto choreography, and present choreography in a cohesive way? Enduring Understandings: 1.) Students will be able to understand the history of Tap Dance. 2.) Students will be able to learn tap dance choreography. 3.) Students will be able to create tap dance choreography.

Watch the Video “History of Tap Dance” and use the Checkpoint 1 guided notes resource to fully grasp the information.

Parental Guidance
If students are purchasing tap shoes for this project, please advise that tap shoes can scratch and scuff floors such as wood. Please ensure that your floors are protected.
Pre-Requisites
No prior dance knowledge is necessary.
Supply List
Tap shoes are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED, but not a necessity. Hard soled shoes will also work if tapping on a hard surface.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Angela Wentworth has been teaching dance for more than 20 years. She holds a B.F.A. in Dance Education and a Masters of Arts in Teaching with a Concentration in Dance. She has built three dance education curriculums for schools in North Carolina and California and has served as a curriculum creator for multiple K-12 teachers. In the private sector, she has taught various levels of ballet, tap, jazz, modern, contemporary, hip hop, lyrical, musical theatre, composition, improvisation, and has also served as a guest teacher and choreographer.
