35 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this class, learners will explore theater and dance basics. During class, we'll play acting games, learn simple dance choreography, and explore different characters through movement and theater activities. Learners will have the opportunity create characters together and try different dance styles. This class requires some space in order for learners to move safely. Slides will be used on occasion in class to guide us through creating acting characters and to help us with visuals during some of our acting games. No prior experience is required for this class.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Learners should have a clear space for moving as some of our dance steps and choreography will require us to move around our spaces. Although nothing will be strenuous, we will move side to side, front and back, and do some small jumps. Wearing shoes or going barefoot is recommended as socks can be slippery on some floors. Water bottles are not necessary for this level of activity, but they are always a good option to have nearby.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello and Welcome! My name is Ms. Whitney, and I’m excited to share my love of teaching and learning with the Outschool community. I’m a firm believer that the performing arts help build valuable tools for life, as well as support for academic skills, which is why I feel so fortunate to teach what I love. My goal for all my classes is to allow students a safe, inclusive, engaging environment where they can spark their own creativity, build their confidence, explore their self-expression, and not to mention…have some fun learning performing arts techniques. My teaching style is relaxed, energetic, but structured in order to provide students with a balance of activities that promote learning techniques as well as leaving space for students to express their ideas.
For the past 8 years, I’ve taught performing arts classes for children ages 2 to 14. In addition to teaching the performing arts, I am schooling my 3 children at home. When we started our journey, I discovered I had a passion for creating curriculum and lesson plans, which has only blossomed while earning my master’s degree. I have a Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction, and a BA in Psychology.
A little more about me: My family and I recently moved to a piece of property that we are trying to turn into a mini sustainable farm. When I’m not teaching, I can be found gardening, working around the property, writing plays, reading, watching movies, and spending time with my family (which includes my dogs, cats, chickens, and fish).
“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
