Many students feel that they are not good at writing, or that they don't know how to finish a piece of writing. In this class, my goal is for young learners to work through the writing process for an information piece from planning to final product. In this interactive class we will work on writing assignments as a group but there will be opportunity for feedback from the teacher for each student. Young writers will practice planning their writing, turning that plan into a written...
This class is taught in English.
Students will be able to --Choose specific main ideas that allow for supporting details --Use sentence starters if needed to begin writing --Focus on and practice the individual components of an information essay --Revise the first draft, focusing on word choice and sentence variety --Add details or combine sentences based on feedback from teacher and peers --Edit writing for spelling, grammar and mechanics. --Complete an essay and share (if comfortable) with class, teacher, and family LEARNER EXPECTATIONS: Please refer to the Learner Safety and Privacy: For Parents https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/579976-learner-safety-and-privacy-for-parents Learners are expected to be able to participate and to come to class prepared. I offer limited support for each student to help them get started, or to talk through the writing process with them. If your learner has difficulty participating due to behavioral or developmental challenges, please be prepared to sit near your learner to facilitate his/her learning. ALL learners are welcome in my class. Some learners may not write as much as others, but that is just fine. The point of my classes is to improve on what a learner already knows how to do, and to expand their knowledge. CLASS BEHAVIOR/EXPECTATIONS AND MUTING AUDIO OR VIDEO POLICY: When a behavior issue arises in class, the learner will be reminded of the class expectations and re-directed. If the behavior continues, I may mute your child, or turn off video to ensure that I provide the optimum learning experience for the other learners (I will always inform your child of my actions in the chat so as not to involve other students). Your child will still be able to access my audio and classroom presentation. Very rarely, a learner behaves in a way that requires them to be removed from class (inappropriate behavior/language/images). In this case, no refunds or transfers will be given, and I will message you about the situation after class. Occasionally, I may need to mute your child due to background noise I will let the child know if that occurs, and let them know that they need to raise their hand to speak. You may also need to mute your child at some point due to background noise, or other reasons. Please feel free to do this at your discretion. Your child will still be able to hear the class interactions.
I have taught writing for 23 years. I am very enthusiastic about writing, and I want students to feel that they can be confident when they begin to write.
Learners will need a composition book, journal, or spiral notebook in which to write as well as a pen or pencil. This will help the student keep writing in one place.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
There will be no formal assessment. Students will self-assess as the class progresses.
3 hours 40 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
