US Grade 2 - 3
Your child will practice reading, spelling, and grammar skills and add a new vocabulary word to their written and spoken vocabulary five days a week. Reading and Spelling instruction is based on the Phono-Graphix Method which was designed for students with Dyslexia. It is a multi-sensory approach and supported by the Science of Reading. Breakdown of the 5 video sessions posted on Monday in one consolidated video. (The video that comes out on Monday will have all five days' worth of lessons.) Part 1- Vocabulary and Spelling: During this part of our daily video, a new vocabulary word will be introduced. Students will learn how to spell it by using phonemic awareness. The teacher will define the word, share its part of speech, and use it in sample sentences. Students are assigned to create a sentence of their own using the vocabulary word of the day. Student-Teacher interaction: The daily assignment is to write a creative sentence using the vocabulary word of the day and send it in a message to the teacher. Learners will receive feedback on the sentences they submit. Part 2- Reading practice: Students will be presented with multi-syllable words to decode. Students will mark where syllables are and where there are instances of multiple letters representing one sound. The goal of this activity is for students to become masters of breaking longer words down into smaller, more manageable parts. Part 3: Grammar and usage practice: (also known as Daily Oral Language exercises) Students will proofread sentences with spelling, grammar, and usage errors. They are expected to rewrite the sentences correctly, and then check their work from the video. Because a different vocabulary word and a different set of multi-syllable word attack words will be used every day, every class meeting will cover new content but in the same predictable format. Sample of vocabulary words and word attack words to be used: Week 1: Vocabulary word-survey. Word attack practice words: beauty, breakfast, against, allowed/aloud, beginning Week 2: Vocabulary word-malice. Word attack practice words: laugh, straight, disappear, anything, delicious Week 3: Vocabulary word- process. Word attack practice words: common, captain, decide, danger, demonstrate Week 4: Vocabulary word- freight. Word attack practice words: soften, worried, enjoyment, champion, comfortable Week 5: Vocabulary word-sufficient. Word attack practice words: simple, picture, connection, adequate, powerful Week 6: Vocabulary word-signal. Word attack practice words: raised, something, choice, material, dangerous Daily Oral Language, DOL class, Science of Reading, Phonemic Awareness
Learning Goals
Students will add one vocabulary word to their spoken and written vocabulary each day. Students will practice, and within 2-3 weeks of completing daily video sessions, become masters at decoding new words. Students will practice proofreading text daily to become proficient in editing their creative work.

I am a certified elementary teacher and certified reading therapist. I am offering this class to give students an in-depth study of how our English words are structured, and how to break them down into their sounds in order to make decoding easier. I teach each lesson using the Phono-graphix method which I have been formally trained in by the program authors. I have been using this strategy with my private students for over 20 years and my students have had amazing success with it.
