Homework
1 hour per week. Students are expected to complete the homework assignment each day for vocabulary and grammar and usage practice. The vocabulary assignment is to write a creative sentence using the word of the day. The grammar and usage homework assignment is to post a sentence or two in the classroom with errors for others to correct, and to participate in the classroom by submitting corrections to other student's sentence submissions.
Assessment
Students will receive informal feedback from the teacher on the Jamboard and through private messages. The teacher will give feedback on students' homework posted to the classroom or to the Jamboard.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 6
Your child will practice reading, spelling, and grammar skills and add a new vocabulary word to their written and spoken vocabulary five days a week.

Reading and Spelling instruction is based on the Phono-Graphix Method which was designed for students with Dyslexia. It is a multi-sensory approach and supported by the Science of Reading.

Breakdown of the 5 video sessions posted daily each week (Monday-Friday):

Part 1- Vocabulary and Spelling: During this part of our daily video, a new vocabulary word will be introduced. Students will learn how to spell it by using phonemic awareness. The teacher will define the word, share its part of speech, and use it in sample sentences. Students are assigned to create a sentence of their own using the vocabulary word of the day.

Part 2- Reading practice: Students will be presented with multi-syllable words to decode. Students will mark where syllables are and where there are instances of multiple letters representing one sound. The goal of this activity is for students to become masters of breaking longer words down into smaller, more manageable parts.

Part 3: Grammar and usage practice: (also known as Daily Oral Language exercises) Students will proofread sentences with spelling, grammar, and usage errors. They are expected to rewrite the sentences correctly, and then check their work from the video.

Because a different vocabulary word and a different set of multi-syllable word attack words will be used every day, every class meeting will cover new content but in the same predictable format.

Sample of vocabulary words and word attack words to be used:

Week 1:
Vocabulary word-unwieldy. Word attack practice words: consume, construction, attendance, governor, peculiar
Week 2:
Vocabulary word-convalesce. Word attack practice words: desolate, apologize, delegate, economical, allowance
Week 3:
Vocabulary word- anxious. Word attack practice words: distinguish, anticipate, eliminate, flexible, contagious
Week 4:
Vocabulary word- boisterous. Word attack practice words: accommodate, convenient, omitted, insurance, accessible
Week 5:
Vocabulary word-compensate. Word attack practice words: criticize, accomplishment, alternative, deceive, assistance
Week 6:
Vocabulary word-obedience. Word attack practice words: improvement, commotion, instrument, ambulance, vigilant

I am a certified elementary teacher and certified reading therapist. I am offering this class to give students an in-depth study of how our English words are structured, and how to break them down into their sounds in order to make decoding easier. I teach each lesson using the Phono-graphix method which I have been formally trained in by the program authors. I have been using this strategy with my private students for over 20 years and my students have had amazing success with it.
