Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 1
Beginner Level
The of training phonological awareness and learning to read are mutually supportive. "Reading and phonemic awareness are mutually reinforcing: Phonemic awareness is necessary for reading, and reading, in turn, improves phonemic awareness still further." (Shaywitz, 2003)

Set aside just 5 minutes a day 5 days a week to work through these phonemic awareness drills. Each week increasing in difficulty. Additional practice activities will be posted in the classroom for practice and students can upload their own phonemic awareness drills in the classroom for classmates to respond with their answers.

Each day Monday-Friday a video of phonemic awareness auditory drills will be posted following the scope and sequence on Kilpatrick’s Equipped for Reading Success.
The teacher will go through each word manipulation activity pausing for students to respond, and then following up with the correct response. Students who need more time to process their answers can pause the video at anytime. This could be even more important in the higher level word manipulation that even I will have to think through each word to find the correct response.

Students will interact with the teacher and classmates by posting video responses to challenges in the classroom. Each student needs to check in at least twice a week with a response to a question or a response to a classmate. Students will demonstrate their learning by posting videos giving challenges for their classmates to respond to.

Beginner levels D-H are intended for Pre-K-2nd grade to be at grade level. It is the underlying phonemic awareness ability that allows students to easily blend words into sounds.

Advanced levels I-M are appropriate for anyone between 2nd grade to adults. The most advanced levels would be beneficial for the most advanced readers. Working at these levels will prepare your student’s mind to be able to focus on reading comprehension when less energy is spent on decoding and blending words.

I am a Reading Specialist at a high need title 1 school. I also have a private practice where I provide intervention to students who have dyslexia. Teaching reading is my favorite thing in the world. If you are struggling or just need support I would love to be a resource to any family working to improve their child’s reading fluency/comprehension.
