Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
🌟 Your teen will spend 20 minutes every day Monday-Friday practicing reading, spelling, and grammar skills and adding a new vocabulary word to their written and spoken vocabulary.

⚠️ Please take the Trial Class before enrolling in this class! The Trial Class slows down the pace to make sure students understand how to work through each activity and how to use the annotate feature. The Trial class will help prepare your student to feel comfortable jumping right in with students who have been taking the class for a long time. https://outschool.com/classes/trial-class-daily-skills-practice-with-reading-spelling-vocabulary-grammar-CnxDFpQC?refuid=p7IL6ySc

🤩 When you enroll in this class, your learner will receive complimentary access to Renaissance learning tools, including Accelerated Reader and MyON. These powerful programs support reading growth by giving students personalized book recommendations, engaging digital texts, and fun comprehension quizzes to track progress.
📚 With MyON, learners enjoy a vast library of fiction and nonfiction books anytime, anywhere.
🧐 Accelerated Reader motivates them to read more and celebrate their success. Access remains active for as long as your child is enrolled in this class—boosting reading confidence and academic achievement every step of the way!

🕰 Breakdown of each 20-minute live class session:

📖 Reading practice: During each class meeting, students will be presented with multi-syllable words to decode. Students will use Zoom's annotate feature to mark where syllables are and where there are instances of multiple letters representing one sound. The goal of this activity is for students to become masters of breaking longer words down into smaller, more manageable parts. Each student will be assigned a word to decode. Students may opt to watch and take notes on how the words are broken down rather than annotating on screen. This word attack process is modeled at the beginning of every class period so that students know what is expected of them.

📝 Vocabulary and Spelling: During this part of our daily meeting, a new vocabulary word will be introduced and students will discuss how they could use it in their written and spoken language. Students will learn how to spell it by using phonemic awareness. The optional homework activity is to write a creative sentence using the Word of the Day and post it to the classroom to share with the class.

🖊 Grammar and usage practice: Students will use the annotate feature to proofread sentences with spelling, grammar, and usage errors. Students may opt to make the corrections on their own paper or whiteboard, then check their work as screen annotation is occurring.

🗓️ If you were to enroll later in the week, your weekly fee will be pro-rated for that week in the form of a refund for the classes previously held. For example, if you enroll and start on a Tuesday, you will be refunded for the Monday meeting your student did not attend.

Because a different vocabulary word and a different set of multi-syllable word attack words will be used each day, every class meeting will cover new content but in the same predictable format.

Sample of vocabulary words and word attack words to be used:

Week of Feb 17th: Vocabulary word-unwieldy. Word attack practice words: juxtaposition formidable ephemeral dichotomy quintessential labyrinth serendipity magnanimous connoisseur ostentatious idiosyncratic clandestine

Week of Feb 24th: Vocabulary word-convalesce. Word attack practice words: ambiguity conscientious ubiquitous embellishment precarious ambidextrous hierarchical altruistic paragon serendipitous articulate perspicacious

Week of March 3rd: Vocabulary word- anxious. Word attack practice words: transcendence perplexing articulate culmination fervent capricious voracious hegemony benevolent egalitarian euphemism dichotomous

Week of March 10th: Vocabulary word- boisterous. Word attack practice words: enigmatic fortitude ameliorate voracity nonchalant ostentatious connoisseur pedantic quixotic harbinger nuance

Week of March 17th: Vocabulary word-compensate. Word attack practice words: rhetoric fortuitous parsimony magnanimous benevolence sagacity elucidate discernment hypothesis paradigm conundrum altruism

🎙️ Students can expect to have microphones on and will be encouraged to participate in discussions. I respect each individual child's learning style so I only call on volunteers unless specifically asked by the parent to encourage participation.

🚧 Warning: There are very important instructions listed in the welcome email you will receive after enrollment. Due to the fact that there are many students attending the class on an ongoing basis, it is challenging for returning students to have to wait to start activities while I explain how the "annotate" feature works to new families who have not read all of my instructions. We only have 20 minutes for the class. We don't want to waste any of it with problems that can be avoided.

📹 We cover a lot of valuable information in a short amount of time so be prepared for a swift pace! The recording of each class will be available for review.

🔥 This class is also offered for younger students and can be attended as a summer camp, spring break, or winter break camp.👇🏻

I am a certified elementary teacher and certified reading therapist. I am offering this class to give students an in-depth study of how our English words are structured, and how to break them down into their sounds in order to make decoding easier. I teach each lesson using the Phono-graphix method which I have been formally trained in by the program authors. I have been using this strategy with my private students for over 20 years and my students have had amazing success with it.
