Class Experience

Cute drawings of kittens, unicorns, fairies, babies and other animals often capture the attention of many kids. They can't resist looking at the big eyes, the long eyelashes, the sweet smile and adorable poses. In this drawing class, I teach how to recreate this! Often, we focus on chibis and kawaii since they are the most renowned style of "cute" drawings, but we also look at other styles depending on student interests, including their favorite characters from brands like Sanrio and Squishmallow.

This is an ongoing class but learners can start or stop or jump in at any point in time since each week works as a stand alone unit. The class opens up with an ice breaker/warm up exercise and challenge. This is then followed by our weekly art project which learners may complete during class time or continue to work on during the week. We end each class with some sharing time for teacher feedback and also to show work off to our fellow artists.

The class topic will often be student led; they propose the subject matter (ie. a baby dragon sitting on a marshmallow) and I supply the know-how. I break down how to recreate their drawing from scratch and make is accessible through using basic shapes and lines. We work together to then use this framework to get to our final product.
Learning Goals
The goal of this class is for students to have fun and encourage a love for art. Underlying this, I am teaching the foundations of future art skills. Students learn how to look at an image and how to dissect the image into basic shapes and lines to know how to create it. This is a beginning art class and as such, we do not delve too seriously into perspective, shading, color composition, etc. I do offer art classes that teach these skills at a more advanced level.
