Description

Class Experience

Notan is a Japanese term meaning balancing light and dark. 

In this class, we will explore the design principle of symmetrical balance through the process of drawing, cutting,  and gluing black construction paper onto a painted background.

Week 1: We will begin by painting the background in wet-on-wet watercolor technique, and set it aside to dry while discussing shapes to practice drawing. We will practice drawing those designs on "practice paper" and then cut out the shapes. These can be...

Pencils, eraser, sharpener
paper for practice (printer paper works!)
good quality paper, 9X12 or 11X14 (Canson Watercolor or Bristol Board are encouraged, and can be found at Walmart or Michaels)
black paper (open stock paper at Michael's, or get a stack of multi-color construction paper and use it in my other classes!)
watercolor paint: I recommend Crayola or Prang
bowl of water
brushes (watercolor, size 8, 9, or 10 work really well for this if possible)
scissors
Elmer's glue (white or clear; NOT gluesticks, please!)

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.

Scissors will be used in this class.
