Class Experience
US Grade 9 - 12
Imagine sitting in English class. Your eyes are reading words, but your brain isn't making any sense of them. Then, your teacher calls on you to answer a question. You panic. And all that comes out of your mouth is "umm." I've seen this happen countless times in literature classes. Teachers ask questions, and students don't know how to respond. And it's not because students aren't paying attention. Oftentimes, it's simply because literature is hard and requires skills that students need to actively build. That's where this class comes in. From Frankenstein to Walden, I help students understand literature and complete assignments for Honors and AP English classes. This class is for students who: -Are struggling to understand the book assigned in English class. -Need guidance on understanding a book or passage to complete an assignment. -Want to have a safe space to discuss a reading. I will not complete assignments for students. But I will coach them and give them tools to help them understand and appreciate literature. ... As soon as you book the class, I'll message you to better understand which book you need guidance for, and we can arrange a time to meet. I'll usually have you bring your book and assignment to class, but if you don't have a specific assignment, and would prefer general guidance, I can create discussion questions for the book. Based on the sample class (below), you can see that each lesson will look different depending on the student's needs. If you message me before booking the class, we can discuss the specifics of what your lesson will look like based on your student's needs. ... Sample class on The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne: The student told me that they need to write an essay on the use of chains as a symbol in chapter 12 of the book. We both read chapter 12 before class, and when we met, we discussed what this symbol could mean. We created a draft of the essay together. After class, the student completed the essay on their own. They sent it to me before submitting the final draft to their teacher. ... Specific books that I have taught in the past: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Walden by Henry David Thoreau The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison Native Son by Richard Wright If you don't see the book you need help with here, please send me a message.
