Homework
In order to help strengthen your child's cursive writing skills, I will post an activity after each class that will be an optional assignment. I like to create class activities to allow for further work on the taught concepts. Completion of the activity is up to parent discretion and therefore, if you choose for your child to complete, I'd love to see their work. I am always happy to provide feedback and comments for any child that takes on the class activity.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner Level
Do you have a learner ready to learn cursive? Perhaps your learner has been taught cursive but needs a little more support! Either way, come join this beginner's cursive class as part of a two week course!

Each class will focus on the four keys to legibility: shape, size, slant, and spacing to help learners understand the key aspects of good handwriting. We will also work on proper pencil grip and paper position to allow writing to flow more naturally and easily for your child. Proper posture is important to having good handwriting! With many opportunities for repetition and practicing these basic skills, your child will begin to notice progress and how their writing has transitioned into a more smooth, and rhythmic flow.

My goal is to help your child develop good handwriting skills and learn lowercase and capital letters. In fact, did you know that learning cursive is actually good for your child's brain? That's right! Research has been conducted to study brain activity in children. Studies show that cursive writing stimulates different parts of the brain than in writing print or typing. Writing in cursive also increases fine motor skills, as well as helps readers learn how to pronounce letter blends.

Each day, we'll begin with learning how to form new letters. Letters will be grouped by the stroke needed to form them. Then we'll have time to practice writing those letters before we move onto writing words that will incorporate learned letters. This will allow your learner to practice reading cursive too, which is a very useful skill! Additionally, your learner, should they choose to, can share their writing with others during our class time. Recognizing others' hard work and efforts is a positive way to let your learner and others know their practice is paying off! At the end of class, we'll play a quick game or activity that helps reinforce the letters used during our class. We may also add in letters already taught to help reinforce them along the way!

I will also provide an activity/assignment after each class for your learner to complete at home as an optional assignment. Some families have asked for additional practice or work for their learner. It is meant to reinforce what was learned that day in class and can be sent back to me for review should you wish your learner to complete it.

After our time together, your learner will have been taught the entire alphabet in both lowercase and uppercase form. I hope your learner will have had a wonderful time learning cursive and will be excited to show off their cursive skills!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
As a Nationally Board certified teacher and one who spent many years in 2nd and 3rd grade, I love teaching cursive. Although many may find cursive writing to be antiquated, there are so many benefits to learning how to write properly. Teaching cursive was always one of my favorite units. Many children find handwriting to be laborious, but I always work to make it a fun and exciting adventure. You will find my teaching style to be very energetic and enthusiastic and I want your child to feel vested in learning cursive as we explore and learn how to have great cursive handwriting. I hope you'll join in to experience the excitement and joy that can come with handwriting!
