Class Experience

Each week we will spend 15 minutes practicing letter formation, words, and sentence continuation. Lessons are short because... well, who wants to continuously write for more than 15 minutes?

It's more important for students to take their time and learn proper formation instead of racing through lessons. I try to make the sentences weird and funny like, "Meerkats really love spaghetti." "Oh, porpoises are SO SNEAKY!" "Awwww! That crocodile will kick that onion!"

Cursive is not only beneficial for their handwriting but also plays a significant role in improving their fine motor skills and nervous system health. The act of writing by hand activates different regions of the brain compared to typing, which helps train the brain to integrate visual and tactile information.

Cursive writing has been instrumental in helping children learn to spell better. The fluidity of cursive writing allows them to understand how letters fit together to form words, leading to enhanced language processing, which is crucial for spelling.

It's worth noting that researchers have credited learning how to write in cursive with a range of benefits for young students. These benefits extend beyond just writing and include building fine motor skills, stimulating different hemispheres of the brain, and creating synergies between the areas involved in thinking, language, and working memory. Progress in cursive writing is not just an improvement in handwriting, but a holistic development of cognitive abilities.
