Learning cursive is great for your brain! Research has shown that writing in cursive stimulates different parts of the brain than writing in print or typing. Writing in cursive also increases fine motor skills, as well as helps readers learn how to pronounce letter blends. Using the D'Nealian Handwriting method (where the letters are slanted slightly to the right as opposed to straight up and down), students will learn the fundamentals of writing lowercase letters in cursive. Learners will work on the joining strokes required to turn most manuscript letters into cursive. We will warm up with practicing these strokes before each letter. Through repetition and practicing the fundamentals, your learner will see progress in their cursive writing. Consistency is key! Practice makes progress! This class is designed for young learners who are learning cursive for the first time. The focus on this class is not on neatness or perfection, but rather on setting learners up with correct letter formation - the neatness will come later in their development. It's okay for our letters to look a little messy as we learn! Each week, learners will be introduced to and practice writing 3-4 letters in cursive that spell out the name of an animal, thing, theme, etc. After practicing the letters, learners will draw their animal/word (freestyle with a bit of guidance). Each learner will have opportunities to share their writing and drawing throughout the lesson.
