What will be taught? - In this one time class students will openly discuss their natural hair texture and their personal perception of it. Encouraging each student to love and embrace their hair and the beauty of it. Topics: 1. Perfect Reflection: Students will look into their individual mirrors and observe their hair and its features. Each student will make a personal comment on their hair color, hair texture, hair length and anything else relative in regards to their hair. After each student makes their remarks, we will discuss how that all forms and types of hair are beautiful in their own way. 2. What is my hair made of? - We will discuss that African American hair is composed of curls, coils and kinks when observed on a microscopic level. Each curl, coil and kink being different sizes and different grades depending on our genetics. 3. What Happens When... We will discuss the transition we see in our hair when manipulated or exposed to certain things and elements. - Water - Wind - Heat - Brushing/Combing - Product Application 4. Personal Reflection: How Do You Feel About Your Hair? - We will discuss personal feelings and questions that each individual student has about their natural hair. This is a time that students can be transparent with myself as the teacher as well as their peers. 5. Healthy Hair is Happy Hair: We will discuss the definition of the word "healthy." How do we know when something is healthy? (People, pets, plants) I will reiterate the importance of having healthy hair and a few different ways of how to maintain and obtain it. - Water: Being sure that our hair is washed and cleaned routinely. Making certain that we also drink plenty of water to keep ourselves and our hair happy and nourished. - Brushing & Combing: Making sure that our hair is routinely combed and brushed so that it doesn't become matted and or tangled. - Hair No No's: Making sure that we don't put harmful and or dangerous items in our hair such as food, bubble gum/candy, paint, scissors (arts & crafts scissors), dirt, sand etc. - Nighttime Routines: Making sure that at night when we dress in our royal pajamas to go to bed, that we also cover our hair in an appropriate sleeping scarf or headwrap. So that our hair can sleep peacefully just as we do. 6. Princess Hair: Curls, Coils, and Kinks! - Each student will be asked to share their favorite hairstyle that they love to wear and or a style that they have seen that they liked. We will discuss the amazing versatility with African American hair and the beauty of it. I will express how that each hair type and style is beautiful in it's own distinct way. We should love our own hair and also appreciate the hair of others.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to embrace and love their personal hair texture and hair type and also acquire knowledge on how to obtain strong healthy hair and how to maintain it.

Hello! My name is Starla, but you can simply call me Starr. I have my BA in Elementary Education with endorsements in reading, language arts, and social sciences. Teaching is something that I absolutely love! In addition, I enjoy reading, writing, art, history and science.
