Description
Class Experience
"Curiouser and Curiouser: Steampunk Alice in Wonderland (Steampunk Fairy Tales)" To save the Hatter, Alice must work with the one man she despises so much that she might still love him. Alice thought she'd turned over a new leaf. No more working for Jabberwocky. No more making deals with the ruthless Queen of Hearts. No more hanging around The Mushroom with tinkers, tarts, scoundrels, and thieves in London's criminal underbelly. But she'd been bonkers to dream. Hatter's reckless behavior...
Students will be introduced to steampunk literature as well as learn a little about the Victorian Era. Students will learn about characterization, plot, setting, and be introduced to a variety of literary devices as we discuss theme and meanig of the work as a whole.
I have been working in education for nearly 20 years, primarily as a high school English teacher and speech and debate coach. I am certified and experienced in both AP English Literature and Composition and AP Language and Composition. I have also taught at the middle school and primary school levels, and I have taught traditional ELA and ESL course in both the United States and China, as well as teaching online. I specialize in literary analysis and writing instruction, but I am also known for my fun and engaging projects and have an extensive background in Project Based Learning.
Students will be responsible for reading most of the book on their own (about 230 pages). Students will also be required to work on and complete their character and costume portfolio and their Hatter Hat.
Students will be required to obtain their own copy of "Curiouser and Curiouser" in paper, digital, or audio form. Students will also need some basic arts and craft supplies (poster board, strong glue or glue gun, paper, paint, etc.) and may also request additional supplies from their parents such as fabric, goggles, steampunk gears, etc. The hats we make will be able to be created with ordinary supplies and things found around the house (old fabric or clothes that can be cut; however, students may request to buy goggles, decorative gears, nice fabric such as leather, fur, or velvet, fake flowers, etc. Prices for these items range from less than $10 up to $30 for standard materials; however, far more expensive items also exist. As mentioned, regular items will suffice and additional purchases are not required, but are optional at parent discretion. A project description will be provided at the beginning of the course or a few days prior.
2 hours 15 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Parents should read the book description provided in the course description to ensure that they approve of the content. These fractured tales are more PG to PG-13, and may not be appropriate for all learners. Parents should also be aware that this book does contain some mildly mature language. It is not extreme nor excessive, but phrases like "Son of a B---" do occur.
