Welcome to our inquiry lab! Our learners have so many questions and curiosities. This class is designed to give your learner the opportunity to ask a burning question, or jump into a curiosity they have, to research, find an answer, and share it with their peers. By giving our learners the space to ask a question, and guide their learning, we open up the possibility for them to dive deeper into their own learning. We encourage and support them to think critically and creatively as they look for an answer to their question. Learners ask a question, set learning goals, implement, reflect on, redirect (if needed). and showcase their goals. Through this process learners develop essential skills like asking questions, researching, collaborating, communicating and presenting our answers. Learners are encouraged to try out their ideas and take risks when looking for solutions and answers. The learning process is flexible, and reflecting and adjusting our learning goals is part of the process. 🌻 The course outline is as follows 🌻 🌺 Week 1: What questions do I have? Types of Questions. Catching our questions and brainstorming our ideas. People who asked curious questions - real life examples of innovative solutions. 🌺 Week 2: Refining our questions and choosing our project questions. Where do I find the information? How do I sort the information I have? How will we measure our success - our goals for the project. Setting learning goals. 🌺 Week 3: Reflecting on my question. Ways that we can present our ideas. Creating a personal rubric / assessment for the project. 🌺 Week 4: The Pitch. Learners will present their ideas to their classmates. They will frame their presentation under 4 main areas: ❓ What I am learning about ❓ Why I chose this question / area, ❓ How I am going to answer it ❓ How will I reflect on my learning (measure my success) (Before 'The Pitch' we will explore what thoughtful and reflective peer feedback looks / sounds like.) 🌺 Week 5: Creation Station 1! Learners work on their projects. They ask questions of each other and the teacher. What keywords help me find information for my question? Do I need to find more information? How am I feeling about showing what I have learned? Have I shown all of the information that I have learned? 🌺 Week 6: The Solution Fair. This week learners will showcase their learning projects. Final reflection: Did I answer all of my questions? Did my questions change during the project? Reflection with teacher and peers. ** Inquiry based learning is a process, and I will guide your learner through the process. I will scaffold and support your learner as they need. If you have any questions or concerns about this class please feel free to reach out to me.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Open University
Hello! My name is Roisin. Welcome to my classroom!
I have a both a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Education. For more than 20 years I have been a teacher and an educator. I have been a classroom teacher, a curriculum designer, a teacher trainer and an online English teacher. I have experience teaching students from PreSchool through to 9th grade, both in a regular classroom and also in a virtual classroom. For me as an educator, it has been rewarding at every level to nurture and foster early skills and equip young learners with the tools they need to inquire and question about the world around them. I love to see how these skills grow and develop, and support learners as they progress throughout the grades.
I believe that children learn when they are actively engaged in their learning, sharing their ideas and collaborating with their peers. Learning is inspired by lessons that are meaningful and relevant to students. The lessons spark their interest, nurture and develop an understanding of a 'big idea' and build essential skills. And of course fun and enjoyment in the classroom are essential ingredients too. When students are happy and engaged, those meaningful conversations and interactions happen naturally in the classroom.
Over the past few years I have learned to surf (badly). I am by no means a good surfer (in fact I'm pretty poor), but there is nothing more rewarding than finally standing upright on that board! Its good to feel the challenge of slowly mastering the various steps, before finally mastering the 'pop-up'. And nothing more humbling than seeing the little kids whizz past you as you struggle to master those skills during the process!
