Curious Kids: Ocean Animals

During this 45 minute class, students will learn about different ocean animals and make an ocean themed craft. Students will: ~Practice listening and speaking skills as they share their favorite ocean animals and something that is that color with other group members. ~Listen to and discuss what happens in the story “Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea" by Jan Peck. ~Draw/color an ocean background picture using a variety of colors and ideas heard while listening to the story to keep them engaged and focused while listening to the story. ~Create popsicle stick sea creatures that they can move through the ocean picture. ~Show and tell about their ocean scene with the group (if they feel comfortable.) ~Examine photos of each ocean animal from the story and learn a fact about each one. Students will be encouraged to share facts they know about each animal with the group as well. ~Participate in a group ocean animal guessing game.

Parental Guidance
Younger children may need a little parent support with cutting the slit in the ocean picture for the craft (aka "popsicle") stick puppets to go through and possibly with cutting out and gluing animal pictures on the craft sticks.
Supply List
Students will need the printouts that will be supplied (There are two pages, but you only need to print ONE page. There is a lighter page to save on ink or a page with a darker outline). Students should have something to draw and color with (markers, crayons, colored pencils, etc.). Popsicle sticks, scissors, and glue or tape are also needed. (Animal cut outs can be attached to plastic straws or pencils if popsicle sticks are not available).
