50 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
During this 45 minute class, students will learn about space, decide what they would need to pack if they were going to the moon, and make paper/straw rockets to launch. Students will: ~Practice listening and speaking skills as they share whether they would like to actually go to the moon or not and why with other group members. ~Listen to and discuss what happens in the story: "If You Decide to Go to the Moon” by Faith McNulty ~Draw/color/write a list of what they would pack to bring if they were traveling to the moon based on what is mentioned in the story to keep them engaged and focused while listening to the story. ~Show and tell about their drawing/list of what they decided to pack for the trip to the moon with the group (if they feel comfortable.) ~Examine photos of rockets, spaceships, the ISS (International Space Station), moon, earth, etc. while learning some facts about each. Students will be encouraged to share facts they know about space with the group as well. ~Create straw and paper rockets to “launch” safely by blowing into the straw. ~Participate in a group discussion of what they’ve learned from the lesson and any additional space/rocket facts they would like to share with the group.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I love working with young children and helping them stay curious and excited about the world around them. I am a kindergarten teacher, an online ESL teacher, and a parent of two ever curious children of my own. My son has become obsessed with rockets/space the past couple of years and we have visited the Kennedy Space Center as well as other museums centered around space and would love to share some interesting facts I’ve learned through these experiences.
