Class Experience

This is the third in a series of year-long History classes, specifically covering the second half of Early Modern History. This class uses the Curiosity Chronicles curriculum to teach Early Modern History 2 for 3rd to 6th graders. Curiosity Chronicles teaches history via conversation between two main characters - Mona and Ted - allowing for the study of history to feel more fun than academic - with input on cultural impacts from friends Arthur and Lily! The student textbook and activity guide will be provided for at home use. I teach in a Socratic style, preferring to ask students for their thoughts instead of imparting my own. As a result, classes tend to be discussion-based. Each week, we will read a chapter of the student text and complete the student activity pages. The first meeting each week will focus on the textbook work, and we will work on a timeline, complete map work, and learn about each "culture corner" in the second meeting.

This class is intended as an elementary history class, so while additional resources are listed in the textbook, we will cover them only as time permits. Students will need access to their textbook and each chapter's activity guide materials while in class.
Learning Goals
Students will continue to gain an understanding of Early Modern History. They will learn how civilizations - and now nations - interacted, and create a timeline to understand how many cultures developed across time.

Parental Guidance
Any potentially emotionally charged expressions around issues in history and/or events occurring to marginalized communities will be handled with sensitivity. Children will be invited to look at issues from all sides, and together we will determine what impacts different decisions had on the communities involved - with the actual impact on the marginalized community firmly at the fore.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
This class will use the Curiosity Chronicles secular history curriculum for the globally minded child, public domain photographs, primary source documents, and insights from texts such as "America: The Story of Us," "Braiding Sweetgrass" and more.
