Class Experience

Students will learn the basics of decorating cupcakes. Do you love baking, but want to give your cupcakes a professional look? We will learn at least 3 beautiful buttercream piping styles to make your cupcakes look as good as they taste. We will also go over a few options to dress up your decorated cupcakes. These same techniques can be used to decorate a cake!

I will demonstrate how to pipe the icing and students will practice, showing off their cupcake decorating skills as we go. By the end of class, students will have a dozen beautifully decorated cupcakes!

Learning Goals

Students will learn to create professionally decorated cupcakes using at least 3 piping styles.

Supply List
-One dozen baked cupcakes
(If you can't get some of these tips, come anyways! You can practice with what you have!)
-Wilton Open Star Cake Decorating Tip 1M $2
-Wilton Round Tip 2A $2
-Wilton Star Tip (#32 or similar) $2
-Ruffle Tip or Flower Tip (#102 or similiar-something teardrop shaped) $2
-Piping Bags any brand (reusable or disposable) $2-$10 (Wilton has nice piping bags, but I've found Walmart's Great Value piping bags to work well too)
-Decorating Coupler $2 for 4 pack (optional-this allows you to use the same icing bag with multiple tips)
-Food coloring (gel is great, but I've used the others in a pinch) if you want your icing colored. You can divide the icing into 2-3 bowls and color as you wish before class.
-Sixlets, sprinkles, or other candies to decorate with (optional)
-A piece of parchment paper or wax paper on a cookie sheet to practice designs

-Buttercream Icing (made before class):
1 cup vegetable shortening (I prefer Crisco)
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 cups powdered sugar
Cream shortening, water and vanilla together with an electric mixer until liquid is completely mixed in. Start on slow to prevent splashing. Beat powdered sugar into shortening mix 1 cup at a time until well blended. Cover with plastic wrap.
