CSI Math Camp: Sleuths Solving Mathematical Mysteries
What's included
6 live meetings
6 in-class hoursClass Experience
Welcome to math camp, detectives! We will use computation and deduction to solve mysteries! CSI Math Camp will be based on learning, practicing, and reviewing math skills that will be applied to decoding clues. The clues will then lead to solving crimes! Day 1: "Zombie Outbreak" A zombie outbreak! Oh, no! Learners will be epidemiologist and apply their math skills to determine where the outbreak began, who will most likely be infected, and what symptoms are most common. Learners will gather information, create a graph to represent the information, and interpret the data collected. Day 2: "Who Kidnapped the Principal?" While on a trip to the local museum, the school's principal was kidnapped! Who did it? Why and where? Learners will use greatest common factor, order of operations, and decimal and ratio skills to solve this mystery. Day 3: "CSI: Shapes, Area & Perimeter" We, as detectives, are trying to stop a group of international evil geniuses, the Mathemagicians, from stealing important museum items! We will do this by solving geometry clues including finding perimeters, classifying shapes, and finding volume and areas. Day 4: "CSI Zoo Madness: Which Animal Escaped?" Which animal is escaping at night and creating a mess for the zookeeper to clean up every morning? Comparing decimals, area, and fractions will lead us to solving this mystery. Day 5: "Whodunnit?" Contestants on a reality TV show are stunned to find one of their colleague is “injured.” Learners will focus on order of operations problems to solve this mystery before time runs out! Day 6: "Who Kidnapped the Mascot?" The mascot was kidnapped during school! Who did it and why? Learners will solve this mystery using division, multiplication, ratios, average, fractions, and percent skills.
Learning Goals
Learners will review many skills that they have been previously introduced to. These skills include, but are not limited to:
~Operations with decimals,
~Comparing and using various operations with fractions,
~Finding products and quotients,
~Converting decimals to percents,
~Calculating averages,
~Working with ratios,
~Graphing, interpreting, and analyzing data,
~Discovering perimeters and volumes,
~Classifying shapes and angles,
~Finding common factors and multiplies, and
~Applying order of operations.
CSI Math Camp provides a wonderful opportunity for learners to learn, practice, and review math skills so that the skills are retained.
