In this one day class students will learn how these organic gemstones and rocks are formed, where they are found and their place in history and human use.

Join us to learn how organic materials become beautiful gems and rocks. During the class we will explore how a pearl is formed, what amber really is, how millions of tiny sea animals become a beautiful jewelry and how wood becomes stone. Many stones, including these organic stones, are thought to have special properties that promote healing, protection, and mystery. Learn more about these beliefs and let us know what you think! I have been collecting and researching crystals and gemstones for many years. I have an extensive collection of crystals and a deep fascination with learning how crystals have been used throughout history. My son hunts and polishes stones in his basement workshop, so I am very familiar with the process of finding and bringing stones to their polished beauty. I love crystals and gemstones, both for their beauty and their versatility. I have a variety of examples some polished and finished and some raw, to share with the students.

A game played at the end of the lesson serves as both a review and an informal assessment of student learning.Grades Offered
It is helpful for the students to have a hard-copy of the handout and a pencil ready before class begins. The handout can be found and copied from the classroom prior to class. If a student has samples of the rocks being studied he or she can have them ready to show to the other students, if they so choose. This is not required, but I find that students enjoy sharing their treasures with the other students in class.
