Class Experience

Do you have a love for all things mysterious? Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster, chupacabra, the kraken.......are they real? Is each a hoax? The branch of cryptozoology believes these creatures do exist. In this summer camp, we will use BOTH sides of science to let each student determine whether these animals are real or not. Students will be presented with evidence for and against a variety of folklore legends to determine for themselves if they truly exist. This summer, use your critical thinking skills and evidence to prove or disprove the existence of legends!

The camp will utilize slides that include many, many pictures of evidence or hoaxes for each cryptid. Videos will be shown as well. Class discussion is crucial. Students will interact with each other during the lecture as we hear what they think about each cryptid. The purpose of this camp is not for the instructor to prove or disprove each legend for but each student to use evidence to determine this on their own.

There is no required knowledge needed for this class. Maybe students have heard of some of these cryptids....many may be new. Bring your theories, sightings, evidence, and stories with you to class!
Learning Goals
Critical Thinking- Each student will determine for themselves whether each creature exists or not and why.
Scientific Method- Students will be presented with the scientific method to help determine whether cryptozoology is a legitimate scientific branch of study.

I was a middle school science teacher for 10 years and my homeschooled my 15-year-old daughter is now in college. I have my Bachelors in Biology and my Masters in Healthcare Administration. There is lots of interest in today's society about pseudoscience i.e. ghosts and monsters of legends. In this class, I want to encourage students to utilize the scientific method to determine whether they can prove the existence of these things. Using their critical thinking skills in this class will encourage them to utilize them in other classes as well.
