 Week 1
Lesson 1
Bigfoot and Loch Ness
This class period is devoted to Bigfoot (Sasquatch/skunk ape/Yowie) and Loch Ness. We also tie in other lake cryptids if there is time.
Lesson 2
Mokele Mbembe and Chupacabra
This class period is devoted to the African river cryptid, Mokele Mbembe and chupacabra. If there is time remaining, we may also discuss Mothman.
Lesson 3
Kraken, Minhocao, Mngwa
For our final class, we talk about the ocean cryptid, Kraken (and it's possible relation to giant squid), the giant earthworm Minhocao, and the feline-like Mngwa. If there is time remaining, we will do a review game.
  • Critical Thinking- Each student will determine for themselves whether each creature exists or not and why. Scientific Method- Students will be presented with the scientific method to help determine whether cryptozoology is a legitimate scientific branch of study.
I was a middle school science teacher for 10 years and my homeschooled my 15-year-old daughter is now in college. I have my Bachelors in Biology and my Masters in Healthcare Administration. There is lots of interest in today's society about pseudoscience i.e. ghosts and monsters of legends. In this class, I want to encourage students to utilize the scientific method to determine whether they can prove the existence of these things. Using their critical thinking skills in this class will encourage them to utilize them in other classes as well.
Activities are not mandatory and can be adapted to fit the needs of each individual learner.
No supplies needed.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
There will be mention of 'creatures' or 'monsters'. Please make sure your learner is mature enough that these elements are not scary. We discuss Bigfoot and Bigfoot-type creatures (yeti, Sasquatch), lake monsters (Loch Ness, Chessie), kraken (large octopus) and show videos of some of these creatures (Bigfoot film footage).
