This is a class for high functioning learners that are unfamiliar with codes. This is ideal for learners that need a challenge outside of regular class work. We will spend two classes on each of six different types of codes. The first of those two will be instructive in which learners can talk about how they think the code works and I will explain before the end of that class. The second will be decoding using the skills they have learned. If time permits, they can write their own codes using the code that we are currently working on. If time permits, we will also discuss other codes that may not be included officially in the class. For the second class involving each code, learners will answer codes in a chat box with the teacher so that the other learners do not see the answers of others which allows them the time to solve on their own. There will be a time limit to solve the puzzles so that some do not sit idly for long periods of time while waiting for others to solve. Clues can be asked for and given in the chat box that is only visible to those that ask and the teacher. Learners will solve the following kinds of codes: (Weeks 1 & 2) Simple Letter Grouping, (Weeks 3 & 4) Reverse Trail, (Weeks 5 & 6) Shift Code, (Weeks 7 & 8) Key Word Code, (Weeks 9 & 10) Date Shift Code, and (Weeks 11 & 12) Twisted Path Code. This class could possibly lead to an on-going class for those that are interested in continuing, however, learners should start with this class so they are familiar with the kinds of codes that will be used in the on-going class. Learners that miss classes will have difficulty solving coded messages when they have not been given the way the code works. Video of missed classes will be provided upon request so that they can be prepared. Please be prepared with the printed pages that will be provided and blank paper to work on so that class time can be used for working rather than gathering supplies.
Learning Goals
To have fun learning to break codes, learning how they work, and solving coded messages.
