In this ongoing class, students will participate in a guided math talk. Students will practice using a variety of mental math and number sense strategies. Students will also work on basic addition and subtraction mental math strategies.

Class Experience

In this ongoing class, students will participate in a guided math talk to encourage building number sense. This class will be learner-led by the learners talking about strategies they use to solve the different math facts.  Some ideas the learners may discuss are counting, skip-counting, making numbers, place value, and any other strategies they have learned previously. Students will also work on solving basic addition and subtraction facts mentally. Each math problem will have multiple...

Students will be able to think flexibly about numbers. 
Students will be able to use mental math strategies to solve equations. 
Students will be able to share their thinking and reasoning about their answers. 
Students will practice discussing math by asking and answering questions of peers.

I have over ten years of experience teaching elementary math in public schools. I also have training in guided math discussions or math talks as well as in best practices for math instruction for elementary students.

25 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
