Cross-Curriculum Novel Study: 'A Long Walk to Water' for ELA & History
Class experience
A Long Walk to Water by Susan Parker is recommended for learners between ages 10-12 and grade levels 5-7. The novel consists of 18 chapters and is 128 pages in length. Once enrolled, learners will receive a research assignment with a website about the history of Sudan and events surrounding the Civil War which provides readers with a background for the novel’s setting. Students will be responsible for reading the material assigned before each meeting and reviewing the study guides provided...
Students will increase their ability to define unknown vocabulary terms by using context clues in passages. Students will be able to write relevant summary paragraphs after reading each chapter (19 chapters in total). Students will be able to discuss setting in terms of time, place, and circumstance and make observations on how the setting of the novel creates conflict for the characters. Students will be able to discuss the literary work using global history vocabulary terms learned and discussed throughout the course such as genocide, natural resources, civil war, and international community. Students will be able to identify figurative language and the author's purpose for using the language.
The course discusses the civil war in Sudan. As a Special Education and English teacher, I have taught a diverse group of global learners for over ten years. I am very experienced in teaching sensitive cultural and global topics through the use of novels.
The book is free online and I provide the comprehension questions.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
The history of Sudan is rather violent and there is discussion about genocide during the course. There are scenes of war in the novel so some parental guidance is advised depending on your child's historical knowledge. I have given this course a PG13 rating and if you are concerned with your child being exposed to material that could be graphic (regarding the civil war in Sudan) then please alert me and I will provide assignments with a cross content focus on the environmental science aspect of the region which is still equally as rigorous.
