Class Overview: Statistics show that around 65% of college students today lack critical thinking skills. That is over half! Students need to be able to take a situation in person or on paper, rationalize through the situation, brainstorm solutions, and then resolve the issue. This class will teach them that in a super fun but realistic way. We have A LOT of fun in this class! About the Teacher: I work hard to always show how important critical thinking is for students, not only in school but real life. I have taught these skills in various ways to all of my students over the past 9 years of teaching. About the Class: Our goal of class is to learn to rationalize the situation, evaluate it, and apply the steps we have learned to discuss possible options and outcomes. In life, sometimes there is not "one" right answer, but many. The goal is to teach students how to be able to think through real-life and educational situations to come to the best solution for themselves. This class, especially the last class, will be discussion based. This class will be fun but will teach your student to think for themselves and always make the best choice. Following class each week, I will put a message in the Outschool classroom with a link to a Google folder where I provide my notes from class, resources, and plenty of activities for you to use on the topic if needed. Students can find their weekly writing activity there. I also link videos in the message for further coverage of topics. Class 1 - Steps of Critical Thinking We will do introductions and then go over the steps of critical thinking in real life and in school work. I will break each step down and have examples for discussion.I also have some brain teasers for some fun! I will provide some activities for the week to work on that will build critical thinking. Class 2 - Problem Solving in Situations We will build on class one and actually use our experience with the steps of critical thinking, but we will work through how to solve some current day issues and what would work best. Class 3 - Real Life Critical Thinking We are working on real-life situations we need to critically think through. I work with them on how to address issues in a critical thinking method instead of a reactionary method. We end with discussion and fun activities. Helpful Information Please let your student know that I love participation but require them to raise their hands to speak. This keeps order in class and lets everyone get a say who wants one. Refund and Pause Policy: 1. If a makeup class is set by me due to a change on my end, you will not receive a refund. You can access recordings and all resources. 2. Transfers or refunds must be requested 2 weeks in advance of the beginning of the class. Otherwise, the transfer or refund will not be granted.
Learning Goals
Students will leave with a solid idea of how to critically think about solutions to problems.
