This is going to be lively and engaging class as we talk about problem solving and critical thinking. Each class will have different riddles, brain teasers, or mysteries to reinforce the skills discussed. Critical thinking and problem solving are necessary skills in life and in the job market so why not start practicing them now and learning the necessary skills that go along with them. Class 1 is all about knowing the difference between fact and opinion. Before you can find a solution, you need to be able to distinguish the facts from the opinions as you work towards a solution. Class 2 is all about inferences. Assuming information can lead to a solution, but first you need to understand when to infer something and when you shouldn't and see how that can play out. Class 3 is all about deductive reasoning. What is it? When do you use it? How does it play a part in thinking critically? Class 4 is all about inductive reasoning. How it is different from deductive reasoning and when do you use it? How do deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning work together? Class 5 is all about problem solving. Now that we understand some different thought processes, let's get into the basic steps of how to problem solve. Where do you begin? What questions do you ask? What information is not necessary to solve this problem? Class 6 is all about good communication. Often times when problem solving, you won't be alone. Other people will be working with you and helping you solve that problem so effective communication skills are necessary. What does good communication look like? How does poor communication look? What are things you can do to improve your communication skills? Class 7 is all about active listening. It's not enough to know how to speak effectively, but you need to be able to listen to others. What happens when you don't listen well? How do you improve your listening skills? Class 8 is about being creative. When problems arise, sometimes you have to think outside the box to arrive at the solution. How do you improve your creativity? How can creativity be a part of the problem-solving process?
Learning Goals
Students will enhance their thinking and problem-solving skills as we break down the steps needed. As well as practice using those skills in each class as they are presented with a variety of riddles, brain teasers, and mysteries at the end of each class.

Michigan Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hi! I'm teacher Veronica. I've been teaching for over 20 years. I’ve taught in both brick-and-mortar classrooms as well as online. I’ve been homeschooling my children since they were in kindergarten. I LOVE to memorize. I started memorizing large passages in 2010 and it's become an addiction with me. I'm offering classes that teach students how to memorize using classic poems. Not only does your child walk away with a poem memorized but more importantly he/she is learning a life-long skill of how to memorize and retain the passage. I'm also enjoying creating classes on problem solving. In these classes, students enjoy solving a mystery, but more importantly I'm teaching them how to think critically and ask questions. I'm laying a foundation of what problem solving looks like and how it can be used in our every day lives. My husband and I lived in Alaska for 18 years with our three children. We now reside in Michigan with our kids, one cat and one dog. One of my favorite things to do is walk around our neighborhood with my husband and enjoy the beauty. In Alaska we even walked when it was -30 degrees.
