Students will learn to discuss and critically analyze television shows. They will learn to form opinions based on evidence, learn different aspects of storytelling, and see where inspiration from real life influenced the show.
I watched this show growing up, and enjoy discussing it with peers and students alike! As an anthropologist, I've studied many of the cultures the show draws inspiration from and can speak to this aspect of the show.
Students are asked to review a synopsis or watch the episodes for the week before class using Netflix or another legal site.
Legal access to view the show Avatar: The Last Airbender outside of class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
If desired, students can write a critical analysis paper. I can give prompts for each Book and students can choose. I will give feedback and guidance where needed. Please message me for more details.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Please review the show and its contents before enrolling your child. It is a children's show, but it may not be suitable for some sensitive learners.

We will discuss issues of cultural oppression/violence as it pertains to the show and its real-world influences in an age-appropriate way.
We will refer to the Nickelodeon TV Series Avatar: The Last Airbender as our source material for discussion. We will not show clips in the class, students will need to watch it on their own.
