Class Experience
In this class, students will analyze the short story "The Black Cat" by Edgar Allan Poe. Students will be asked to read the story prior to class. We, as a class, will discuss the characterization, plot, and meaning of the story. We will also discuss the history of Edgar Allan Poe and how his history applies to this literary piece. While we discuss this critical analysis of the story and author, students will create a work of art to reflect their understanding of "The Black Cat." Students...
Students will learn to explore, analyze, and value classic literature pieces. They will learn to express their own critiques verbally and creatively.
I have master's degrees in history, professional writing, and human services counseling. I teach several critical analysis and history classes via Outschool and at our homeschooling co-op. I am passionate about classic literature. I have studied Edgar Allan Poe stories for many years. He is one of my favorite authors.
Students will need to read or listen to an audiobook of "The Black Cat" by Edgar Allan Poe prior to attending class.
Students will need to read "The Black Cat" by Edgar Allan Poe prior to coming to class. They can also bring their chosen art supplies (paper, pencils, colored pencils, markers, clay to sculpt, paints, etc.) to create a work of visual or written art to coincide with the story.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will provide an informal assessment upon completion of the class.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
"The Black Cat" by Edgar Allan Poe includes incidents of violence, alcoholism, domestic violence, animal abuse, and murder. Parents should evaluate if this class is appropriate for their students.
We will refer to Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat" throughout this class. Students are also encouraged to bring art supplies or paper and pencil to create a work of visual or written art to coincide with this analysis.
