Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
This one-time, 50-minute class will start by exploring how the Earth was once covered entirely with water and land later formed through volcanoes. This explains why some of the oldest species on the planet live deep under the ocean, like the 125 million year-old Goblin Shark species.

Then, we'll discover how the evolution of these animals over time was shaped by the extreme environment of the deep ocean in places like the Mariana Trench. We'll watch video clips to learn how the Giant Squid has adapted to withstand intense water pressure, how the Anglerfish uses bioluminescence to see where the sun cannot reach, and how the cold of the deep ocean made the Japanese Spider Crab grow 12 feet long!

Finally, we'll explore how scientists are able to study these creatures using remote-controlled submarines, among other methods. This multimedia presentation will include clips from BBC's Planet Earth.

Students are encouraged to engage and ask questions, but are welcome to passively absorb if they prefer.

Optional Homework: Write a reflection to promote knowledge retention.

Finally, I recommend checking out my Teacher Profile, especially my Teaching Philosophy section, to make sure this is a fit for your student.

I also offer this class is part of a multi-week Virtual Natural History Museum course: https://outschool.com/classes/virtual-natural-history-museum-dinosaurs-the-ice-age-oceans-and-rainforests-UWh8H1Gu

and as a Self-Paced Class: https://outschool.com/classes/exploring-oceans-marine-mammals-to-the-mariana-trench-jbykcyyx#usu529M6QA

if your student prefers one of those methods of instruction.
