Class Experience

Students will participate in a role-playing game that allows them to experience various parts of Greek Mythology as a young hero/heroine. Zeus has began sensing tensions between the Gods and hopes to surprise them all with a gift. He wants to create a garden where all of the Gods can go and enjoy their favorite animals in peace. The mission of each hero/heroine will be to collect a list of rare creatures for this garden.

Class #1:
Students will fully create their hero/heroine character on the character sheet. Next, they will choose a class or role and craft/collect items for their adventure. They will receive special items and choose their abilities. Finally, they will build a temple dedicated to a special god/goddess.

The creatures may be collected in any order depending on the choices of the heroes in the adventure.
Class #2 - 10:
The heroes will travel to a different location each class to collect one of the rare creatures on Zeus' list: Calydonian boar, Cetus, Crocotta, Hippoelectryon, Ophiotaurus, Tarasque, Telchine, Tuemessian fox, and Unicorn. They will have to find a rare item that attracts that creature and battle anything standing in the way of that creature's safe return to Zeus' garden.

This is a role-playing game with some similarities in format to other role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. I have chosen to do it in a much more simplified format so that the class would still be focused on gaining more knowledge in Greek Mythology. If you have done any of the other mythology role playing adventures, you will want to print Heroes in Training Character Sheet 2 again and the Creature Collector Sheet attached under the welcome on the classroom page.

Learning Goals

The goal of our lesson is to experience some of the adventures that happen in Greek Mythology. If the student has knowledge of Greek Mythology, their hero/heroine will make wise decisions in the different encounters. If the student has not read Greek Mythology, they will encounter new monsters, gods/goddesses, and places. Every student will receive all the information they need to make the best decision for their hero/heroine.

Parental Guidance
Mythology often has a lot of violence and death due to their stories centered around war, heroes vs. monsters, impossible quests, and jealous gods/goddesses.
