Class Experience

This four day class will engage the creativity of every child. Students will be asked to collect items from nature and a few household items prior to the class so that each student is prepared to create during the class. When the class begins, the students will be given a brief history of the art technique or will be introduced to an artist who practices nature art.

After a brief introduction to the theme of the class, the students will be shown several examples of completed projects so that they understand the goal of the class, become inspired and get their creative juices flowing. As a class, we will review the supplies they have collected and each student will be encouraged to share plans of what they plan to make during the class.

Using the supplies collected and the examples shown, the students will be given the opportunity to activate their creativity and engage their imagination as they design something of their own.

As they create, I will encourage the students, help them formalize their ideas and will assist them if they are struggling with an aspect of their creation. Students will interact with each other as they share their ideas, their creative process and their finished projects.

Day One - Nature Paint Brushes
Day Two - Nature Faces
Day Three - Bark or Rock Painting
Day Four - Nature Wands/Stick People

Supply List
Supplies Needed:

Please see the classroom materials for more detailed and revised lists of materials.

Day One - They students will be creating their own paint brushes using sticks and nature items that they feel will work well as the bristles of a brush. Please ask them to select several sticks and several items they may try as the heads of the paint brush. They will also need paper, paint, something to write with, rubber bands, tape and/or string to attach the brush head to the handle of the nature paint brush.

Day Two - The students will be creating faces using items from nature so they will need either the printable, a piece of paper or a shape cut from cardboard and/or a paper plate; as well as, nature items to make their faces such as leaves, grass, flowers, rocks, acorns, tree bark, etc. They will also need glue and possibly crayons/markers.

Day Three - The students will be painting on either bark or rocks so they will need a piece of tree bark and/or several rocks, paint, paint brushes, a cup of water to wash brushes and a towel to wipe hands and brushes. Make sure to wash and dry the rocks prior to class and if you have ideas that require multiple layers of paint, please paint the base layer prior to class.

Day Four - The students will be choosing whether they would like to create nature wands or stick people.
To create nature wands, they will need sticks, string and/or glue as well as nature items they want to use to decorate their wand.
To create stick people, they will need sticks, glue, markers and nature items that they want to use as clothing for their stick people. They could also use construction paper, fabric scraps, yarn and googly eyes if they have them.

Note to Parents:
Please have your children wear a smock to keep their clothes clean. Also, please make sure that your child has several nature items, extra sticks and some paper so that they have additional things to work on should they finish the main project quickly. It's always better to have extra! I have included a sample picture of each project so that you can best help your child collect supplies.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello. I am a certified elementary teacher who currently is a stay-at-home mom for two amazing little girls. We enjoy spending time in nature, arts and crafts, playing games, cooking, gardening in season and reading lots of books. While at home, I also work part-time for an exclusively outdoor forest school program and we are so grateful that we have the opportunity to learn while spending time in nature.

I have a passion for helping young learners discover how they learn best while helping them feel successful. I have worked one-on-one with learners from preschool to college age but I always gravitate to the early years because a solid foundation affects all future academic success. I believe that everyone has the potential to achieve success in all areas of life.

In addition to teaching academics, I have many years of experience in successfully helping learners develop their executive functioning skills, discover their learning styles and become successful learners.
