4 live meetings
3 in-class hours
Homework
2-4 hours per week. -After class one, students will choose characters, list traits, and choose a trope for their story. -After class two, students will plan their setting, P.O.V., conflict, resolution, and begin writing. -After class three, students will continue to write their fanfiction and get feedback from the teacher. -After the last class, students will turn in their completed fanfiction story for a final teacher review. Students should not feel stressed to complete all the writing in the class. They will be able to complete the writing after and between classes, sending me questions and parts of their writing as needed. I am very responsive to and encourage their messages. Writing between classes is very important and necessary to the success of each learner and the group as a whole.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 7
This 45-minute class will meet 4 times total in four weeks to work on understanding what fanfiction creative writing is, the parts, process, and planning for writing, and completing a short piece of fan fiction.

-The first class will review fanfiction with a brief description and an example, then lead into brainstorming characters and their traits and exploring different trope possibilities. Homework will be to choose their characters and trope and list the character traits.

-The second class will facilitate planning the setting, P.O.V., plot, and conflict. A fanfiction planning outline will be included and used in the process to help students understand how the outline is used and helpful. If time allows, students may begin to write. Homework will be to begin writing their fanfiction story.

-The third class will focus on sharing, brainstorming, dealing with writer's block if necessary, peer help/review, and editing. Revising and editing will be discussed heavily to help students understand their importance in the writing process. Students may actively write, revise, and edit in this class. Homework will be to continue writing, revising, and editing.

-The fourth class will be for final touches and turning it in to the teacher. The students will be welcome to share their fanfiction stories with the class.

Students are welcome and encouraged to participate in class discussion-style learning and review sessions. They are prompted to ask questions and seek peer and teacher input.

Extensive feedback will be offered between classes for all learners who submit their work to the teacher on the Outschool platform.

By the end of the course, students will understand what fanfiction is, its parts, the process of writing it, the usefulness of brainstorming and outlining before writing, and the importance of revising and editing.

Learning Goals

Learners will:
-develop narrative writing skills
-interact and manipulate ideas to aid in comprehension of story elements
-understand characters, traits, settings, conflicts, resolution, and the fanfiction writing process
-practice dialogue writing (in some cases)
