Creative Writing Workshop: Poetry
Class experience
US Grade 9 - 12
This poetry writing workshop will expand students' ideas of poetry and poetic forms. Students will be given different writing prompts to try out to create new poems during the class. They will also get to share their poetry written both in and out of class time with their peers to receive feedback on their work in a traditional (but online) writing workshop atmosphere. Each week's class session will be broken up into 15 minutes of in-class writing and 45 minutes of workshopping poetry...
Students will have many opportunities to write and revise poetry throughout this class. They will also learn to give and receive feedback on poetry in a workshop setting.
I earned a minor in English with a focus on creative writing when I completed my bachelor's degree. I have participated in multiple writing workshops, and I have two poems that have been published in a literary magazine.
Homework Offered
Homework is entirely optional. Students who wish to bring pre-written poetry into the weekly class that was written in their free time are encouraged to do so, but those who want to focus on the in-class writing prompts and workshop process are at no disadvantage for not completing outside work. Suggestions of extra activities, exercises, or readings that students can complete will be made each week.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will receive feedback from classmates and from me for every poem they share during the class. In order to encourage creative freedom and the writing process, no formal assessments will be made.Grades Offered
