In this course, students will learn how to develop ideas through writing. They will be given plot and character to begin with and will then develop a story with beginning, middle, and end. Topics will be revisited every 4 weeks. 1. Plot Structure 2. Writing with different genres 3. Adjectives and adding sensory description 4. Editing and revising *Although skills are revisited every month, sentence starters will not repeat, so students can continue month after month, practicing their creative writing skills. Class Structure: Class will be student driven and teacher guided. The teacher will use the start of class to discuss the elements in a story. After the prompt is provided, students will write a short story. During the writing time, the teacher will also write and do a think aloud process along the way. The majority of class time will be writing and sharing. Teaching Style: I will present the topic to the class each time and provide guidance as they engage in discussion. I will share the silly sentence starter and we will have a short discussion about setting and character ideas before beginning to write. This class will rely heavily on each individual's participation. Student Interaction: Students will interact with one another by asking questions and sharing ideas for their writing process. Students will share their story they wrote for feedback as well. *Basic writing skills required.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Kelley and I am a middle school teacher by day. Language arts is my specialty but also like to dabble in some other areas such as career writing and project-based learning for any subject. I believe that having fun while learning helps us to retain information more successfully. Also, as a teacher, I always learn something new along with my students. This also lets them know that I don't know everything but am excited when new info or skills come my way. I am always willing to help a student who is stuck or just needs that little extra push!
The kinds of classes I am looking forward to teaching are writing classes such as Journalism, Analysis, and creative story telling. I will also be teaching reading classes such as characterization and storytelling. Don't forget to find my project-based classes such as Book in a Bag.
