What's included
4 live meetings
2 hrs 40 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Class Experience Participants in Creative Writing: Unlock the Block will learn to insert the five senses and their feelings into their writing, utilize peer feedback to inspire future writing, add spice to their writing, visualize the written word, and use their imagination to spark creativity. Students will have the opportunity to be fully engaged through short lessons, Power Point slides, individual sharing, and inspiration from each other. Weekly writing assignments will be given and asked to be shared in class. Class 1: Using Voice and Feelings in Writing Introduce yourself and share your favorite food/snack item. Free write about your favorite food. Discuss the 5 senses and learn ways to insert them into your writing. Talk about the writing process and the elements of a good paragraph. Unlock the block with pointed questions that produce ideas. Class 2: Show vs. Tell Discuss a list of word affirmations, and share homework essays in a positive environment where classmates are encouraged to find “one good thing” about each essay. See how feedback from others, as well as listening to other writing styles, inspires the writing process. Learn about good sentence structure, adding spice to sentences, and how to “show” the reader. Unlock the block with questions to accompany the writing prompt. (The flying pig) Class 3: Visualization Share homework essays and motivate each other with supportive comments. Close your eyes and listen to a short piece of writing. Find out how what you see is different than your classmates by drawing the scene (no drawing expertise required) and telling what you see. Unlock the block with using photos and art to produce ideas. Use the rich, descriptive words of others to inspire each other. Choose a bridge and write a descriptive essay for the following week. Class 4: Tell This Story Share your descriptive (bridge) essay and find out if your classmates can guess which bridge you chose. Reinforce sentence structure, overall story flow, and descriptive elements. Use your imagination to tell the story of a presented photo. We will wrap up the class with tips on how to continue unlocking the block in your future writing assignments.
Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from University of Cincinnati
I am a home educator with over 13 years of teaching experience with ages preschool to 12th grade. Specifically, I have taught multiple years of Middle School and High School English (including composition, literature, and grammar). Currently, I teach an intermediate and an advanced high school level composition/literature course at our area homeschool cooperative.
It is my belief that even the most reluctant writers can be unlocked with the right guidance and prompting. I have a college sophomore on the autism spectrum and a high school senior with ADHD. Teaching them has provided me with the unique insight of how to teach children, with difficulties, to express themselves.
