Class will be a combination of discussion, analysis, and writing. The first 30 minutes, we will discuss what makes a great character. We will look at protagonists from popular young adult fiction, discuss how to humanize characters, and the different character development methods. For the next 15 minutes, we will work on the dossier method and use it to create characters for the students' own writing. Any leftover time will be used to continue working on student dossiers and answer questions.
By the end of the class, students will have created a character or expanded an existing character from their writing using the dossier method.
As a professional writer, I have studied the art of character development for years. I am a fantasy and science fiction novelist and currently in the process of finishing my first novel with the intent of publishing. To date, I have used the dossier method and my own personal model well over 150 times to create dynamic characters that drive plot. It is my belief that this is essential for effective storytelling. This is a class that I wish had existed when I first started my journey to becoming a writer and I have planned the curriculum with this in mind. I am the perfect teacher for this class because I know what writers want to learn and improve my lessons as I learn new things through my own writing on a daily basis.

There will be a brief mention of anxiety and depression as they relate to character traits. This will be part of instruction on flaws v. limitations and I will talk about them being the later. There will be no discussions about mental illness.
