Description
Class Experience
After reviewing theme, events, the plot--the sequence of events, setting, and the characters I ask for the student's ideas for a story. We work together to develop more details. It is fun! Even shy students do well when asking for their ideas. After the online class with the student(s), I will send via OUTSCHOOL the notes I take during class. Your student will then use these notes to write a short story and send it to me within 4 days. I too may use those same notes--adding extra...
My goal is to open up the creativity of students and help them to write a short story. To unlock their imaginations and memories of past experiences that will be put into story-form. *Writing stories with details will help students to COMPREHEND what they read in other classes and do better on school homework and tests in other subjects such as history, science, English, and math word problems.
I have a master's degree, am semi-retired, and I teach a junior high class and a high school class. I do after school tutoring with grade school students. My philosophy: “No one can take away your education.” I encourage students to have fun learning and to take ownership in their education. I have a great rapport with students. I enjoy telling stories, flying kites, cooking on a BBQ, and sports. I hear from kids and parents, “Teacher James, where do you get your energy?”
Homework-optional-- if the student wants to write a story about a dog. What kind of dog? The student may want to research simple facts about that breed of dog and share them in class verbally or via chat box. I do a little research for my stories. One student had info on dad's car; where it was made and the engine size, etc.
Paper and pencil to jot down your ideas and to draw pictures about the story.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
If requested, I will give a letter grade on the student's A) participation and B) final story.
50 minutes per class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
