What's included

US Grade 2 - 5
In this one-time class learners roll dice to choose story elements (character, setting, plot), then after brainstorming with fellow classmates, they'll use their imagination to write a story using those story elements. This method encourages reluctant writers to get their creative juices flowing. Stories can be serious or silly. It's all up to the writer and more about getting learners to be actively engaged with the writing process. Class Schedule: Introduction Ice Breaker Roll Dice to Choose our story elements: *Character - a bee, a kid, ice cream man, a camper, an octopus, or a shark. *Setting - the beach, the playground, the ocean, the forest, or a garden. *Plot- doesn't know how to swim, lost their new sandals, their ice cream melted, wants to make friends but others are afraid of them, there is a terrible storm with thunder and lightning, or their air conditioner broke. Brainstorming *Together we'll verbally brainstorm ideas for their story. I find that learners often get wonderful ideas from one another. Writing *Students will spend time writing while listening to relaxing classical music. We'll also discuss vivid verbs and the use of descriptive language. This will be done in a casual manner, not formal instruction. I'll give examples and encourage learners to include some strong descriptive words in their writing. Sharing *Each student is encouraged to read their story aloud, though it is not required. Learners will be encourage by receiving compliments, emojis, and other positive reactions from the teacher and fellow learners. Please note that this class is meant to be a fun way to encourage learners to write more. It does not focus on direct instruction to help students improve spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, or other writing mechanics. I want learners to be encouraged to write more often. The rest will come with time.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Maryland Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I grew up in Wisconsin where I completed my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education at UW Stout. I've taught for the public school system for 14 years in a variety of positions including classroom teacher, interventionist, ELL teacher and elementary science lab teacher. I hold a Masters Degree in Reading and School Administration from Johns Hopkins. After leaving the public school system I've spent the last several years teaching middle school Science and History at a homeschool tutorial while being a homeschool mom. I enjoy teaching hands on engaging courses that spark the interest of students with the ultimate goal of encouraging them to become life long learners. I welcome student interaction and questions.
In my personal life I LOVE to read, travel and explore new areas, especially the beach! I am a Girl Scout leader and adore every single girl in my troop. As a troop leader I am certified in several outdoors areas- archery, canoe, kayak, camping, etc. I can't wait to share some of my love of the outdoors with families here on Outschool.
