US Grade 2 - 4
In this one-time class, students will roll virtual dice to choose from a variety of story elements (character, setting, and problem), then use those elements to write their own creative short story. This class is a great way for students to try out a class without an ongoing commitment. If your student enjoys the class and would like to participate weekly, I also offer "Creative Writing: Roll A Story (Ongoing / Weekly)" where they can be enrolled on an ongoing basis. Class Activities: - Introduction - Choose our story elements Using virtual dice, we will roll three times to choose one (1) character, one (1) setting, and one (1) problem. The students will use the three chosen elements when writing their stories. Here are some examples of story element options students may see in this class: Character - 1. a farmer, 2. an astronaut, 3. a chef, 4. a monkey, 5. a horse, 6. a talking pencil Setting - 1. a school, 2. a grocery store, 3. a jungle, 4. a snowy day, 5. on a rollercoaster, 6. a park Problem - 1. gets swallowed by a whale, 2. loses their wallet, 3. gets bad news, 4. gets lost, 5. is very hungry, 6. gets a sunburn If we roll the dice and get numbers 3, 5, and 1, the students will write stories about a chef on a rollercoaster getting swallowed by a whale. - Brainstorm ideas: We will answer questions and verbally brainstorm ideas about the character, setting, and problem to help students develop ideas for their stories before writing. - Writing time: Students will write their stories in a private (just one student) breakout room for 10 to 20 minutes. The time given may be different each week and depends on the number of students in class and how long other activities take. - Sharing time: Each student is encouraged to read their story aloud, though it is not required. The teacher and students will offer positive comments, emojis, and reactions to each other to show appreciation and encouragement. *Please note that this class does not focus on helping students to improve spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, or other writing mechanics.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their creative writing skills, oral reading and speaking, and expand their imaginations as they create their very own short stories.
