Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Beginner - Advanced Level
This ongoing course is perfect for anyone who wants to write! Whether you are an experienced writer who can fill endless pages with your creative ideas or a beginner writer who is looking for a good place to start, this class is for you.

The first time you come to class you will create your main character. All of your writing in class will be about this character or from their point of view. You'll give this character details such as their appearance, their likes and dislikes, their personality, quirks, and what motivates them.

In each class after the student's first class, they will be given a writing prompt at the beginning of class. Writing prompts can include:

"Imagine that your character woke up in a city they've never been to and they only have $5 in their pocket. What would they do?

"Have your character tell someone about their most traumatic life event."

"Describe your character's room. What does it look like? How is it decorated? Is it bright with light, or dark? Is the room clean or dirty?"

"Your character arrives at Hogwarts for their first day of school. It's their turn to use the sorting hat. What happens next?"

The students will have 25 minutes to write as much or as little as they want for each prompt. After writing, the students will have a chance to share what they wrote with the class and participate in group discussions.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a master's of education in teaching and learning and a graduate certificate in gifted education. I'm excited to use the principles of higher-order thinking to help develop the student's creativity. A well developed creative mind is also a problem-solving mind, so, by helping students learn to be creative we are also helping them learn how to use their brains to solve problems.
