In this Writing & Presentation & Minecraft camp, students explore ancient civilizations or fantasy worlds to become inspired writers, presenters, and builders in Minecraft. Students will become time travelers, inventors, and creators. They will practice various writing genres, They research the setting, develop characters and contents, outlining the story or presentations, writing the draft, revising and editing with peers, and building all the scenes in Minecraft. Students will experiences various writing skills by embracing their passion for gaming, creating, and expressing. In the end, they will have digital writing products such as stories, presentations, brochures, newspapers that include screenshots from Minecraft that they can share with their friends and family! (For this class, only Minecraft Java Edition (not the Bedrock edition) for PC or Mac is supported. It is not compatible with iPads, tablets, phones, Chromebook, or game consoles. Students must purchase the Java Edition of Minecraft for their personal computers; tablets, Chromebook or consoles will not suffice. · Teamwork skills through collaborative learning · Literacy skills developed through writing and creative storytelling · Spatial intelligence and app literacy taught through creative world-building · History & Geography learned in a fun, new way, utilizing STEM technology Students’ progress will be directly evident based on the things that they create. Throughout the class students and parents will have the privilege of seeing their writing continue to grow in length and their Minecraft buildings become more and more elaborate. At the end of the class, students are provided with their finalized digital writing products where they can see the end product of their work and reflect upon their progress. The teacher will wait up to 15 minutes for students to arrive. If students do not show up within that time and haven’t provided advance notice, the session will not be rescheduled.

Students will receive information for our own private Minecraft server.
Supply List
Students will need to download Minecraft Java Edition and Zoom. They will also need a microphone and a camera for video communication.

Teacher expertise and credentials

Our teachers often have experience teaching both in person and online and many are pursuing or have received degrees in education.
The founder of Playful Digital Learning, Yoonhee Lee, has done extensive research on game-based literacy learning. She has a variety of teaching experience in K-12 and adult contexts in Korea and the US. She is currently teaching pre-service teachers in Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at ASU.
Lead Teacher, Ashtyn Dial, graduated from Arizona State University with a Master's in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. She has worked with children for several years and has taught many subjects including game development, language, writing, music, and more.
