Let's practice our creative writing skills and become better writers! These writing classes are designed to foster each students' love of writing. I strive to help learners improve their writing and express their thoughts with the support and guidance of a K-8 certified teacher. During this 8-week narrative writing class, we will go through each step of the writing process. We will discuss the writing process and go through each step together. I have taught many creative and narrative writing lessons in the classroom with positive results from students. My learners have exclaimed excitedly, "I love writing now!". I am excited to foster and enrich a love for writing in all learners! During each week's lesson, we will have a lesson on a part of the writing process. The lessons will be on a slide show presentation for students to follow along. We will discuss a success criteria and collaboratively come up with a criteria of what makes a great story. Below is the weekly breakdown of how your learner's knowledge will grow and ways that we will extend their writing experience. Week 1: Listen to and read an example of a writing piece and work together on revising it to make it even greater. Discussing elements that the learner likes and dislikes. Examining other pieces of writing helps learners dissect writing and understand how to excel in their own writing. Week 2: Collaboratively come up with success criteria on what is needed in a great story. Week 3: Focus on descriptive vocabulary as well as adding emotion to our writing. We will write some examples and share with the group. Week 4: Learning about the plot of a story. Students will then brainstorm ideas for their stories. Beginning to think about adding as many details as possible to make our writing come to life. Week 5: Character building will be the topic of this class. Students will begin to think about characteristics their characters will possess. We will discuss adding emotion, feelings, thoughts, dialogue, and opinions for our characters. Week 6: Setting, the pace, and tone of the story and looking at where the story will take place. We will also explore if their story will be writing in first person perspective. Students will practice writing a great beginning to engage the reader. Week 7: Main event in a story will be the topic lesson. We will brainstorm different climax ideas and what could happen afterwards. Students can begin thinking about the ending of their story. Week 8: Editing and revision will happen during this class with a final presentation of the beautiful work at the end of class. Students can share their work and we can provide positive feedback. Following each lesson, students will work on assignments and tasks that will support their growth in the writing process. Students will work on their tasks on a Google slide link that I will provide for them prior to our first class. Students can choose to print and handwrite their work or type out their wonderful ideas. The lessons and discussions will be during the first 25 to 30 minutes. Learners will then have approximately 10 to 15 minutes at the end of class to work on their stories independently with my support. If students complete more writing while offline, I will review it all during the following class. Let's have fun writing and learning!
