***THIS IS NOT AN ART CLASS. It is a creative WRITING class.*** TEACHING STYLE: Being able to paint a picture in the reader’s mind is the beginning of great descriptive writing. In this 6 week flexible course that meets by video and in the classroom, not live, learners will engage in an interactive, colorful power point presentation where they will learn descriptive writing techniques to make their writing come alive for others to see and experience. Each week we will focus on a creative...
• Descriptive writing using sensory words and strong verbs and adjective • Creative Writing: Showing vs. telling, passive vs. active writing • Creative Writing: Figurative language; hyperbole, personification, similes, metaphors, etc. • Creative Writing: Writing from prompts according to the lesson's them. • Poetry: Learning how a poem is really a short story that paints a picture in the reader's mind so we must choose the best words possible to paint a picture with our words.
I'm a published author who developed these creative writing techniques when I started teaching an elective course at my kids' school over 10 years ago. I found that many students didn't know how to write creatively and bring the picture in their mind to the paper, so I designed a program for children using the techniques I used as an author. I'm also the author or an award winning novel writing course for teens called "Release the Novel in You" which you can find on Amazon. What parents are saying: Gina is a phenomenal writing teacher! We have loved working with her. We have a range of ages and she is great at adapting to their ages and learning styles. She's very patient and good at helping them focus. My kids have learned so much and been stretched and challenged in the area of writing. I highly recommend her to anyone looking to advance in any area of writing! - Bethany mother of 4 tutored students.
Homework will be give each week. This may include additional videos to watch outside of class and writing assignments and activities. Each week learners will be assigned homework to be done and turned in before the next class for evaluation. Homework will be checked for completion and understanding. More detailed feedback may be given if there is a lack of understanding of the material.

* Students can submit their worksheets for review, however detailed grading will not be given. Some specific and general feedback may be given if I see an area they are not understanding. * Assessments will be done through classroom participation, activity sharing, and writings shared. Parents will be notified if a student needs more help in a certain area, but it is up to the parent to work with the child outside of class. * It is the parent's responsibility to follow up with any questions and concerns. * An informal assessment will be given as needed when homework is turned in and evaluated. * A more formal assessment is available on request only.

I love seeing students get excited about writing, even reluctant writers. Ever since I was 8 years old, I've been journaling and writing poetry to express things I couldn't speak out loud or didn't know how to. My thoughts just came out better...
