Creative Writing & Poetry P.a.I.N.T. With Your Words (7-12) Self-Paced

In this 6 week flexible course, your learner will use words instead of paint and a brush to create a picture in the reader’s mind. We begin by learning good writing techniques, then end by writing poetry and stories.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
***THIS IS NOT AN ART CLASS. It is a creative WRITING class.***

TEACHING STYLE:
Being able to paint a picture in the reader’s mind is the beginning of great descriptive writing. In this 6 week course that meets by video, not live, learners will engage in an interactive, colorful power point presentation where they will learn descriptive writing techniques to make their writing come alive for others to see and experience. Each week we will focus on a creative writing "P.A.I.N.T with your Words" element, that we will apply to writing creative paragraph, poems, and stories. Optional activities such as the 8 Parts of Speech picture scavenger hunts, creative video challenges, and artwork will be assigned as well as other writing activities.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A flexible schedule learner lead course
**Videos and worksheets will be posted on Mondays and due by the end of the week.
Video activities, challenges, and/or art projects will be given throughout the week to reinforce the weekly lesson.

6 Lessons
over 6 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Syntax Makes Sense!
Learners will be introduced to syntax and why it's important in writing. Then we will review the 8 parts of speech and how to write strong sentences using various sentence structures. A "Mad Libs" parts of speech review, stair poetry and a story writing prompt will be given to reinforce the lesson
Lesson 2:
P.A.I.N.T. 101
Introduction to the acronym P.A.I.N.T. and how to use words to be descriptive so that the reader will see the same picture in their head that we see. We will learn the difference between active and passive writing through examples and writing exercises, and students will practice active writing through prompts.
Lesson 3:
How to Show, not Tell
Writers will learn the difference between "showing and telling" especially when writing emotion and how this descriptive writing technique brings their writing to life. Creative writing exercises and prompts will be assigned as well as an emotion collage which will be a fun and creative way to practice showing instead of telling.
Lesson 4:
Identify the Five Senses in Writing
Learners will identify the five senses and learn how to use them in their descriptive writing of setting. Creative writing sensory homework will be given so learners can experience the five senses for themselves and use it in their writing. Activities such as a sensory walk and the "blind paper bag" sensory activity which students will be encouraged to video will be a fun way to enhance the lesson.

I'm a published author who developed these creative writing techniques when I started teaching an elective course at my kids' school over 10 years ago. I found that many students didn't know how to write creatively and bring the picture in their mind to the paper, so I designed a program for children using the techniques I used as an author. I'm also the author or an award winning novel writing course for teens called "Release the Novel in You" which you can find on Amazon.

What parents are saying:

Gina is a phenomenal writing teacher! We have loved working with her. We have a range of ages and she is great at adapting to their ages and learning styles. She's very patient and good at helping them focus. My kids have learned so much and been stretched and challenged in the area of writing. I highly recommend her to anyone looking to advance in any area of writing! - Bethany mother of 4 tutored students.
