Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 10
This writing course is aimed at both reluctant and inspired writers. We will study the parts of a magazine and create a class magazine to be published on our website. Each student will contribute one story or article, and at least one supplementary item (crossword puzzle, illustration, etc.) In the process, students will improve their understanding of the six traits of writing: ideas, organization, voice, sentence fluency, word choice, and conventions.

Students interact with other students and the teacher via weekly discussion forums & activities. Students will post weekly writing assignments that the teacher will review with comments and suggestions each week. At the end of this course we will have a digital magazine created by the entire class!

Online learners will engage in interactive online lessons and weekly assessments or assignments. Students have one week to complete the weekly lesson activities. This class runs “asynchronously” (participants to do not need to be online at a specific time each week); however it is not self-paced. Assignments are due every Sunday night.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Woodside Learning Center offers online classes for homeschooled students and those in traditional schools. We aim to provide small, personal classes that help students remember the joy of learning. Currently, we offer courses for students in grades 3-12 in creative writing, research papers, personal finance, study skills, SAT prep, and college admissions essays.

Every student approaches education with different strengths and experiences. As a result, learning is an individual challenge for each of us. Our goal is to help students harness their strengths, push beyond their weaknesses, and learn that challenge is not a bad thing. Most of all, we want them to remember that learning can be fun!
