Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Sometimes finding the muse in creative writing can be challenging. Writer's block occurs and the writer feels stuck and frustrated. Maybe the writer wants to engage in creative writing and doesn't know where to start. This course is for the beginning and inspiring creative writer. Students will learn how to find inspiration using common items and ideas and they will build and develop using description and inventive language. Not only will students create creative pieces of writing, but they will build everyday writing skills as well. Good paragraph form, sentence structure, grammar, descriptive language and well developed progression are skills that are also used in academic and professional writing situations. Creative writing is not just for building poets. Creative writing can help build all around writing skills!

Students will progress through a series of writing exercises to build on their ability to tap into their creativity. They will learn to describe things from memory; play with words through freewriting exercises, storytelling, describing views, writing letters and using dialogue; using pictures for motivation; using music to guide the creative process and tapping into senses. There will be no LIVE meetings during this class so students will be able to work independently and on their own time during this course. Each week's assignment should be submitted prior to the start of the next week. However, I can schedule live sessions as needed throughout the course.

Students will submit pieces of writing throughout the course for evaluation and feedback. Video feedback will be provided to students by the teacher. Students will also read and comment on a classmate's submission each week. Students will be encouraged to comment on what they liked about the piece as well as offer up respectful and constructive feedback as the reader. There will also be weekly interaction threads posted in the classroom where students will discuss and reflect on the writing process for each assignment.

By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of creative writing pieces that they can expand upon or keep as composed.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have over 16 years of teaching experience at the middle, high school and college levels. I have seen some essential writing skills lacking in many college students. Building these skills early, and in a way that is creative and interesting, can set up quality writing skills well into adulthood. Many creative writing courses focus on one genre of writing as opposed to working on developing a well-rounded writer for all types of writing. That is the ultimate goal of this course.
